A safeguard review is a process we always welcome. The review, which took place at the beginning of the year, helps to address how we can improve our practice as well as celebrating everything we do well with regards to keeping children safe. Overall, apart from tightening the wording within some of our policies, they were extremely happy with the procedures we have in place and spoke highly of our children who shared positive experiences about safeguarding at Fletching. We are so proud of them.

In February, we embraced Mental Health Awareness Week. It is so important that children are taught how to communicate their feelings rather than holding it all in. Sometimes it is so hard to talk about how we feel so we encourage the children to let us know through worry boxes, talking to their friends and through our PSHE (Personal Social Health Education) sessions.

We began the week with a whole school collective worship, where this year’s theme was on ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’. The children explored feelings based on the animated film, ‘Inside Out’. We used this to develop their understanding of knowing what different feelings feel like. It helped to provide children with a range of strategies to be able to ‘grow’ their moods for the better. Some examples we discussed was to exercise, meet friends, listen to music and spend time with family, even our pets.

Our children participated in another day of ‘NO PENS’. This is an initiative to help develop the children’s oracy skills and provide them to be better equipped when talking in front of an audience in the future. The theme for this day was all about storytelling. Being able to read is key to accessing the curriculum. The children participated in sharing their own love of story-telling and had lots of discussions around books. It was so hard not to pick up a pen (even for the adults) but they absolutely smashed it!

* Celebrating 200 years of Fletching School *

This year, the Fletching Church of England Primary School is proud to be celebrating its 200-year anniversary!

This year is the 200 Year Anniversary of our wonderful school. We will be celebrating this incredible achievement at the Christmas Fair on the 7th December. Please come along to view some historical pictures and mementos, catch up with old alumni and enjoy a selection of festive activities and stalls!

“The school always used to put on the most incredible Sports Days, Harvest Festivals and of course, the Nativity in the Church. I remember maypole dancing on the grass at the back of the school for all the celebrations. There was a wonderful sense of community as so many of the village either worked in the school or sent their children there. It’s wonderful to see it still thriving now.”

- Sharon Taylor - Pupil 1972-79

“Local journalists used to visit the school every week to find out what we were doing. It was a brilliant way to keep families close to all our efforts. We didn’t think of ourselves as a ‘small school’ and were always planning new activities, from UK wide science fairs to our very own school elections, as well as plays and pottery classes for the children.”

- Derek Swaine - Headmaster 1972 - 1978

“I always looked forward to going into school and always had a smile on my face in the mornings. Playground duty was great fun and ‘health and safety’ hadn’t been invented yet. The children used to swing on ropes, 12 kick footballs and play hopscotch. There was lots of falling over, and kisses to make them better.”

- Sue Alexander (né Evans) - Clerical Assistant /
Dinner Lady / Classroom TA 1974-1998 and parent to four pupils

We have created a lovely mug to celebrate the occasion and raise funds for the school. If you would like to purchase one, please email ptafletching@gmail.com or come along to enjoy the stalls and activities we have planned for the Christmas Fair on 7th December.
